Unbound:
A Theology of Freedom
Our Conviction
Freedom is not something we strive for; it is something we learn to receive, recognize, and walk in. Jesus declared:
“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18)
This verse is not about controlling heaven, but about aligning with it.
What Jesus Meant by "Loosing"
When Jesus speaks of binding and loosing, He is speaking within a Jewish framework of authority-the authority to:
-
Discern truth
-
Declare what aligns with God’s will
-
Release what God has already established
The grammar of Matthew 18:18 points to heaven as the initiator: What is loosed on earth has already been loosed in heaven.
This means:
-
Freedom originates with God
-
Authority flows from sonship, not striving
-
The Church participates in what heaven has already decreed
Freedom as Formation, Not Performance
Freedom is not a moment, it is a formation.
Freedom is not the absence of discipline, it is the presence of truth.
Freedom is not independence, it is belonging.
Freedom is not rebellion, it is right relationship.
Authority Flows From Belonging
The authority to “loose” is not given to individuals detached from community, but it is entrusted to a formed, reconciled, discerning body.
This means:
-
Freedom is practiced together, not alone
-
Truth is discerned in community, not isolation
-
Authority is exercised for restoration, not control
We believe freedom flourishes in:
-
Scripture
-
Prayer
-
Community
-
Spiritual maturity
Freedom: On Earth as it is in Heaven
As a collective, we commit to loosing what heaven has already released:
-
Freedom from shame and condemnation
-
Freedom from false identity and fear
-
Freedom from striving, performance, and comparison
-
Freedom to live as sons and daughters of God
And we commit to forming people who:
-
Know the Word
-
Discern truth
-
Walk in humility and authority
-
Live free for the sake of others
